One of the biggest fundraising nights in the New York City Met Gala seemed to spread quite the wrong message for many this year. The event, regarded as the world’s most prestigious event in the fashion industry, received major backlash online for promoting unhealthy beauty standards.
One of the most anticipated guests of the night, an icon in the fashion industry, Kim Kardashian, showed up to the fundraiser wearing an original Marilyn Monroe dress she wore to President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration in 1962. Kim admitted losing 16 pounds in just 3 weeks to fit into the dress, now valued at over $10 million.
Many people, including celebrities, felt that going on a crash diet just to fit into a dress for one night was too extreme and promoted unhealthy dieting. The “Riverdale” actress Lili Reinhart went on to her social media to call out the “stupid, harmful celebrities” taking extreme measures to “fit in a f***ing dress.” Although Lili didn’t mention any name, the followers interpreted that Lili referred to Kim Kardashian.
