Italy Is Literally Giving Away Its Castles For Free

Have you’ve ever dreamed of having your own castle? If yes, then now is your chance to make your dream come true. So far, Italy is giving away 103 run-down properties, including villas, inns, and castles for free. That means anyone can start building their personal versions of Winterfell, Casterly Rock, or The Pyke. However, as with everything good there’s just one catch.

All the recipient must do is pledge to renovate the buildings in a way that will diversify Italy’s tourism industry. More specifically, they must transform them into hotels, restaurants, visitor centers, spas, shops – anything that will attract tourist traffic. Surely, this will help ease crowding in popular Italian tourist hubs like Venice and Milan. Thus, it helps tourists be provided with lesser-known spots along cycling paths, hiking trails, or religious walking routes.

“The project will promote and support the development of the slow tourism sector,” Roberto Reggi from the State Property Agency told The Local Italy. “The goal is for private and public buildings which are no longer used to be transformed into facilities for pilgrims, hikers, tourists, and cyclists.”
