Giant Optical Illusion Transforms A Street In Montreal Into Wavy Sand Dunes

In Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi once said “Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them.” And it seems that nothing represents that as well as the artwork “Moving Dunes” created by the Canadian architecture firm NÓS.

“Moving Dunes” was an idea after an annual call for proposals in order to install a large-scale artwork on the Avenue de Musée. This 2018 project coincided with the museum’s exhibition, From Africa to the Americas: Face-to-face Picasso, Past and Present, so that prompted NÓS to evoke the perspective-bending approach of cubist painters. In other words, it is a large-scale street art in Montreal that transforms the street into something unreal.

The anamorphic work of art consists of lines of neutral colors that undulate along the path, creating a deceptive path that mimics deserts and beaches. The chrome spheres that periodically appear along the street reflect the surrounding architecture and thus emphasize the wave effect created by the artists. Moreover, the dunes bend the viewer’s perspective in such a way that it forms a deceptive path mimicking patterns you’d see on sand in a desert. Given these points, huge chrome spheres add to the illusory effect and the result is absolutely mind-bending.

It uses a technique called anamorphosis, which requires the observer to experience the mural from multiple points of view in order to fully appreciate it.

The anamorphic installation transforms as the viewer moves and interacts with it.
