18 Lovely Animals Sculptures Made Entirely of Seashells

Collecting shells and pebbles on the beach is a popular amusement for many. However, New York-primarily based artist Anna Chan took this popular amusement to the next level. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, work dried up for Chan, who is a jewelry designer by profession. Therefore, to pass the time, she and her 10-year-old daughter used their days at the beach. As a result, they started accumulating seashells and producing animal-encouraged sculptures from them.

Chan carefully chose shells that match the real-life characteristics of each animal. Certainly, it looked very artistic. The initial sand and shell sculpture Chan established was a turtle. Thus, putting her skill and her daughter’s creativity, they both managed to mix in different types of seashells to create all sorts of characters by their seashell art. As a consequence, they are currently known on Instagram for their very attractive artwork which is done by using various types of seashells.

What begun as anything to do in the course of lockdown has now developed into a key target of Chan’s inventive practice. “The seashells I find inspires my work. The bucket of moon-snails I collected over several months eventually became the sheep when I finally figured out a way to use them without being too contrived.” said Chan for Earthwonders.

She first began creating them with her daughter throughout lockdown past year…

“Using seashells to decorate the sand sculptures actually happened by chance. During covid lockdown last year, my daughter and I visited the beach often. I’m a jewelry designer and work was slow so I took it on the sand to release some of my pent up creativity.”

“I worked on jewelry designs with mother of pearl inlay for several years so it was quite natural to me to adorn the turtles back with seashells on the beach for my first piece created collaboratively with my daughter.”

…but now the innovative amusement has turn out to be “a bit of an obsession.”

Anna Chan Art
“I begin every piece by moistening the sand with water. That is the only way they will bond together because I use regular beach sand unlike sand sculptors who use a special sand that locks together. With my hands I slowly shape the sand to resemble the subject I have chosen and refine and compact the sand until it is ready for the shell mosaic. The shells are pushed into the sand slightly so it stays in place.”

Chan diligently chooses shells that match the actual everyday living colors and textures of the animal she is creating.

“If too much pressure is applied, the sand will crumble, likewise too little pressure, the shell will fall off. It took about a year for me to be confident I can technically assemble anything my mind fancy.”

“Currently, I have other types of seashells sitting in storage waiting to be repurposed into a new life once I can solve the riddle. I also look through a lot of artwork, architecture and design for new ways to apply the seashells. Even though they work in different mediums, I’m interested in how others apply color, texture and shape to achieve a certain look. That helps me expand my creative range so my work can grow.”

“I’m so in love with sand and seashells I hope others can experience my joy as well” said Chan for Earthwonders.

Now dealing with squirrels it can be quite challenging to be able to capture their emotions, but this talented photographer didn’t fail to serve.

“I have no idea if the squirrels have a lot of emotions, except hunger, fear, and sleep, but I would like to think they do. And I always look for pictures that seem to express those feelings,” said the photographer. He had taken thousands of shots and it’s hard to select some out of his collection.
