NYC Subway Station Gets Remodeled in Colorful Dog Mosaics

Art in public transportation can make stations more than just places to wait. Mainly, because subway stations can be very gloomy and boring. Thus, an artsy way to spice up these public transportations is always a good idea. It is almost like it gives an identity to that space. And when people pass by to go to work or run errands, instead of a blank wall, they would have the chance to look at something brighter and happier. And it might slightly make their day better.

Accordingly, two different artists gathered together to make this American subway a place to present dogs in mosaics. And honestly who wouldn’t love an art piece whose a dog is featured in it. Especially if they are dressed in human clothes.

William Wegman is the author of the murals he is well known for the beautiful portraits of his pet. So the portraits of this famous dog were turned into highly detailed mosaics by German artist Mayer of Munich. William stated that “I wanted to create portraits of individual characters, people who you might see next to you on the platform,”

William adopted his dog Weimaraner in the 70s, oddly the dog became one of his main inspirations. Making him change his attention from painting to photography. But also got William into the most creative groove, thus he made most of his famous work portraits of Weimaraners wearing clothing.

The message the artist wanted to convey was that he was eager to show portraits of everyday individuals. That you might see on the subway platform “For these, I dressed the dogs in more or less ordinary clothes, nothing too fashionable” so the portraits presented in the subway could be more relatable.

And as you may see the results are fantastic. It makes me go and visit the NYC subway just to take some pictures of this delightful piece of work. But what do you think?! Are you in the same mind as me? However, don’t forget to let us know in the comment down below. And check more about the artist in the connect tab.

In collaboration with artist William Wegman, they installed colorful mosaics in the newly renovated 23rd Street F/M subway station.
