She’s 85% Paralyzed, But That Doesn’t Stop Her From Drawing Masterpieces

One billion people, or 15% of the world’s population, experience some form of disability, and by no doubt, these people have it way harder to navigate through life. But that “harder” is never “impossible”. In fact, this exact condition often pushes these people to go out of their way and use every bit of energy they have left to create amazing things, which many of us usually take for granted. Disability is usually a hint to look for other ways to do things, which might prove way more successful, but it is never a definition of our abilities. And Fatemeh Hammami Nasrabadi is the living proof for that.

Her body is 85 percent paralyzed but she found the strength to pursue her passion for becoming an artist. Fatemeh uses her legs to draw some amazing paintings. This inspiring 31-year-old Iranian artist is capable of amazing things despite her disability and shows that any illness or condition doesn’t necessarily have to limit you from living your life to the fullest and achieving your dreams.

Fatemeh admits that she finds painting portraits the most interesting. She’s able to portray her characters meticulously most of the time using only colored pencils. Fatemeh has perfected her skills in the art of portraiture over the years with the help of two teachers who discovered her talent in middle school.

“I love painting faces. When I want to draw a portrait, I start with a curve and round the human face for the beginning to design. This is the law of face painting,” said the artist.

Fatemeh has been sharing her technique and snippets of her drawing process up close on Instagram and inspiring others with her incredible talent, patience, and determination, as well as an infectious smile!

“The biggest challenge for me is that I have 85% disability and that makes it very difficult for me to paint. I only work with one of my legs.”

Fatemeh, the second-born of twins, was deprived of oxygen at birth, which caused a severe disability. Despite the obstacles, the artist learned to dream big and work hard to make them come true. Fatemeh has become a bright star in the Iranian art scene and her works have been exhibited all around Tehran. Fatemeh also writes and three of her books with writings have been published so far.

“I have been interested in painting and drawing since I was a child and I tried very hard to get here! I am happy and thankful that my efforts were worth it and now I am happy that I did not disappoint.”
