One thing that is quite obvious it that women change a lot after they become mothers. Not only physical transformations, but after an experience like that you can see that their emotional side is not the same, and it won’t ever be the same now that they have kids.
To document this process better, photographer Vaida Markeviciute-Razmislavice started a project where she photographed 33 women to study the changes they’ve gone through the moment they became moms. Therefore, her project is also titled Becoming Mother, which was inspired by her own experience of motherhood.
Vaida takes two shots of women on their most critical times to express the before and after of becoming a mom. She focuses on the eyes as a reflection of their thoughts and feelings, making their faces the center of the photoshoot.
Her entire idea was based on the way how a lot of people in today’s society see motherhood. Some think that it’s just an obstacle to achieving something better in life, and that’s the reason why the photographer wants to put this transformation in the spotlight from people who really experienced it and know the difference between being a mom and being just a woman.
She decided to focus more on the eyes since it’s the eyes that really show the emotion that is within. To get women to participate in this project, she did a short presentation of the project and shared it on her Facebook page.
A lot of people responded to her invitation, and there were only 3 conditions they had to meet in order to participate. They had to be pregnant with the firstborn; two, to participate in the second photoshoot within the first 3 months after the baby (or babies) were born; and three, allow unlimited publication of the two portraits.
