As many have already heard, a severe baby formula shortage hit the United States earlier this year. It’s claimed that the initial cause of the formula shortage was COVID-19-related supply chain issues, which is still seen as the leading causality of deficiency to this day. Yet, some people don’t understand how big of a problem it really is. Some assume the formula is not even a necessity because babies were born and thrived before breast milk replacement was even invented.
Historian of infant feeding, Dr. Carla Cevasco, went on Twitter to debunk the myth that all babies in the past relied on their birth parent breastfeeding them. She also explained the importance of access and touched on the need for better support systems for breastfeeding. The thread went viral and amassed over 160k likes. It has also received incredible support and gratefulness from the Internauts, especially mothers affected by the shortage.
