According to YouGov poll results, 63% of women who walk alone at night “always” or “often” feel unsafe. That represents a 17-point increase from the 46% of women who said they felt this way in a survey conducted three years ago. The numbers are increasing for a factor that shouldn’t even be something women have to deal with or worry about. However, society still has to take many steps for this to change.
Recently, a woman shared a story on Twitter, which soon gained a lot of attention, calling for a change in society and providing a glimpse of hope for women. Amy Clarkin, the author of the tweet, described how her walk home from a wedding was one nerve-wracking experience that could have ended much worse. She was being followed by a group of guys on her walk home. However, one guy from the group asked the other friend to stop, and the men ended up leaving Amy alone.
This inspired Amy to share her story on Twitter and show people how effective it can be for a single man to stand up for a woman. Amy admits that women shouldn’t have to worry about their safety, but they do. However, “every time someone tells their mates ‘that isn’t acceptable’ we get a little closer to not having to,” Amy added in her tweet.
