Even though, tourist attractions that can’t be missed, there are plenty of places to see that are under the radar; often known only by locals.

Jellyfish Lake – See The Creatures: There are 70 marine lakes located in this region. What makes Jellyfish Lake stand apart from the rest is that it contains jellyfish. Too many of them! It was closed for public in 2012 owing to the diminishing population of jellyfish in this lake, one of the weirdest places across the world for sure! Scientists assumed that it was the end of this beautiful lake. But the population of jellyfish grew in recent years and it has once again been opened for the public. Cool, right? Location: Palau. 3. Svalbard, Norway
Svalbard is located between the North Pole and Norway, known for its rugged landscape and terrain glaciers. Here, the best of Arctic wilderness can be found alongside polar bears, foxes and a wide range of other arctic animals. It’s a relatively undiscovered area, unpopulated by tourists. Sustainability is key in Svalbard, with more than two-thirds of Svalbard being protected. Northern lights are also easily afforded in Svalbard during winter.
4. Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
Located in Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses is a site to behold. On a small hill in Šiauliai, a collection of more than 200,000 wooden crosses are found here. The history of these crosses can be traced back to 1831, as a symbol of resistance against Russian reign. Under the Russians, the hill was bulldozed twice as religion was prohibited but Lithuanians continued to erect these crosses to resist the occupation. In 1991, Lithuania gained independence and the hill continues to be a symbol of identity and religion for the country. This eerily beautiful place is a must see for anyone visiting Lithuania.
5. Blood falls
Blood Falls is an outflow of an iron oxide-tainted plume of saltwater, flowing from the tongue of Taylor Glacier onto the ice-covered surface of West Lake Bonney in the Taylor Valley of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Victoria Land, East Antarctica. The cause of this color was shrouded in mystery for nearly a century, but we now know that the iron-rich liquid turns red when it breaches the surface and oxidizes––the same process that gives iron a reddish hue when it rusts. … Researchers used to believe that Taylor Glacier was frozen solid from the surface to its bed.
6. Psychedelic Salt Mines in Yekaterinburg, Russia:
Don’t be fooled upon entering these salt mines. You are not in any way drugged into seeing things in a different form. These psychedelic patterns on the walls will surely leave you mind boggled as to how they were formed. As a result of the mineral carnallite, natural colorful swirls are formed.
7. Door to Hell, Turkmenistan
And with Heaven, there’s Hell. The Darvaza gas crater is also known as the Door to Hell. The gas crater is a national gas field which was identified by Soviet engineers in 1971. These engineers believed that the field contained substantial oil, and began to drill the ground. In doing so, the ground collapsed and formed the crater. These engineers then expected that poisonous gas would be released into the atmosphere as a result, and intentionally set the crater on fire hoping it would burn out within hours. 8. Pink Sands Beach
The sand at this beach is pink in color due to the presence of certain minerals and plankton. According to recent scientific research, the pink hue comes from foraminifera, a microscopic organism that actually has a reddish-pink shell. The sand is a mix of coral, shells, and calcium carbonate. Only a few pink sand beaches exist in the world. The rarity of these beaches adds to the charm and mystery they hold among the human population. Location: The Bahamas. Best time to visit: December to May. How to reach: Fly to the Bahamas and take a ferry or private boat to Harbour Island where the beach is located.
9. The Corals of Palau, Republic of Palau
It is not surprising if you’ve never heard of the Republic of Palau. This island country is made up of more than 500 islands, located in the Pacific Ocean. It’s a relatively new state, having gained independence from the USA in 1996 and it currently only has slightly less than 20,000 inhabitants. While unknown to many, it is actually one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world because of the diverse and untouched coral reefs of the island country. 10. “Crooked forest” of Western Poland,
Explore the mysterious “crooked forest” of Western Poland, with 400 pine trees all growing with a 90-degree bend at the base. The reason behind the curved trees remains unknown to this day.
11. Lake Natron – The Scariest Lake
Looking for some weird places in the world? How about this terrifying lake? Animals that die in this African lake are turned into statues, through calcification. The presence of huge volumes of sodium bicarbonate ensures they turn into mummies. And because of the high alkaline collection, the lake looks red in color, especially during summer in Tanzania. This is the reason why this lake is also known as the ‘Petrifying Lake’. In spite of all these conditions, it is grazing ground for the Lesser Flamingos. Fancy a dip? Don’t even think about it. Location: Tanzania. Best time to visit: June to August. How to reach: Fly to Tanzania and book a guided tour of Rift Valley of which the lake is a part.
12. Die Rakotzbrück – The Nature’s Own Ring
Die Rakotzbrück bridge is another strange place and comes under the weird places in the world. Constructed in the 19th century is famed for its unique construction accuracy, with the bridge and its reflection merging into a complete and perfect stone circle, no matter where you see it from. Spooky! It is in fact one of the weirdest places in the world. This is probably why the bridge is also known as the ‘Devil’s Bridge. It seems that the makers of the bridge emphasized more on its aesthetics than its utility. Both the ends of the Rakotzbrücke have thin rock spires installed, to make it look like natural basalt columns, which commonly occur in many parts of Germany. From there you can take a taxi to the Devil’s Bridge.

New Zealand is full of surprises and Waitomo is one of them. This village in New Zealand is perhaps unknown to many. The highlight of Waitomo is actually the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This extensive cave system is home to thousands of glowworms that illuminate the caves. An ambience of mystery, magic and adventure is found in these caves.

Slope Point is the South Island’s southernmost point is another of the strange places in the world . The forest here is home to trees that are permanently twisted and windblown thanks to the intense Antarctic gusts. Windy much? This is one of the windiest strangest places in the world. The sight is all the more intensified by the rugged cliffs, eroded by the strong winds and time. The place is used for sheep farming, though there are no houses around. Another highlight of this place is the AA signpost that is installed here showing the distance to the Equator (5,140 km) and the South Pole (4,803 km). Location: New Zealand. Located near Kunming, the Dongchuan Red Land has been increasing in popularity over the years. It’s gained the nickname “God’s Palette”, for its distinctive vast red lands. It has become a haven for hikers and photographers because of its beautiful landscape. The rich levels of aluminium and iron is what gives the soil its reddish hue. This combined with the stunning blue skies and surrounding green fields, creates some sort of watercolour image that is sure to please the eyes.

See the sea life in Rangiroa, a ring-shaped atoll in French Polynesia that is known for oysters that produce black pearls. It also has some of the world’s best scuba diving, and visitors can see dolphins, manta rays, green sea turtles, and hammerhead sharks.
17. Caño Cristales – The River Of 5 Colors
In the summer months, this Colombian river turns red. Counted as the most weirdest places in the world, the river bed is covered by a unique species of plant, and that is what turns red. Another one of those mysterious places on earth underwater. The river is commonly called the “River of Five Colors” or the “Liquid Rainbow”. It has been called the most beautiful water body on Earth. There is a defined contrast between these two rivers of Switzerland; one is blue and the other brown. They never fully mix due to the difference in density. They mix in Geneva, which is situated in Switzerland. It is hard to walk by this beautiful marvel of nature and not feel overwhelmed by whatever nature has to offer us.
